Cal doesn't like to talk about his past, training, or real homeworld--having learned that this brings him undue hostility & suspicion. Cal instead tries to steer the conversation in some other direction. He is not above bold-face lying about his past as an alternative to the truth of his heritage.

Cal was a promising career Mechwarrior on Terra, until he met Shauna Hayes. They were infatuated with each other, spending long walks outside of campus, secretly joyriding around the 'mech parade grounds, and generally getting into mischif--as two people in love will. Shauna's father, the Commander of West Point, did not approve of her relationship with a young mechwarrior. When he found out that Cal was that particular mechwarrior, he had Cal expelled from West Point at the end of his Sophmore year. The Commander called in some favors with ComStar and had Cal removed from the Terran system forever. ComStar, never an organization to destroy a promising candidate, tweeked the request slightly.

ComStar found Cal a position in the Capellan Confederation's Armed Forces and made arrangements for him to receive a 'mech. The idea was for him to finish his education "in the field." ComStar representatives told Cal that if he could survive in a military unit "for awhile" and distinguish himself, then they would reconsider the Commander's request--possibly repatriating Cal to the Terran system. To make things worse, the CCAF further obfuscated things by giving him what was essentially a stolen Battlemaster to do it in. So, Cal now found himself in the 2nd Sarna Reserves, assigned to the augmented 213th Aero-squadron with a "hot" 'mech. He later sold the 'mech back to the Steiner mercenary unit that it was stolen from, reinvesting the funds into a Tikonov design. The vehicle was listed as destroyed during the fighting, in order to hide the transaction from the prying eyes of the Maskirovka.

Note: At the time of his release from West Point, Cal held the ComGuard rank of Acolyte I-Epsilon. His current plans include being on Terra for the Graduation Ceremonies in May of 3028.
