It's like putting your ear to the stone wall in your room and trying to make out the music of the dance in the next cell. Or watching a ballerina perform in the middle of the room through your slitted eyes when you're supposed to be asleep on the floor. Sneaking the last sip of brandy from your master's glass as you clear the table.

Something you know that you shouldn't be doing. You know you will be in so much trouble if you get caught. Punished by varying degrees, depending on the seriousness of your transgression. More so on your master's mood.

There's something delightfully wicked about this activity, the insolence. The quiet testing of your boundaries. Pushing, to see if you can extend the edge of your world. One little bit at a time.

It's all you can do. It's all that you're allowed to do. A small, secret act of defiance. A way to strike out quietly against something larger and more powerful than you're allowed to ever be. Something insignificant. Something that will go almost unnoticed.
