Welcome to Northwind!

Draconis March, Federated Suns

The Benwyvis Valley, Northwind

Greetings! And welcome to the Planet Northwind. I am Adept Brit Kryal of ComStar, it is my pleasure to upload this information about my beautiful world to the Davion Ministry of Tourism. It is my hope that you, my faithful reader, will someday be able to see the stunning Northwind for yourself in the days and years to come. Until then, join me as I take you on a quick tour of the sights.

[CMSTR-NW3023 **Line Active** The data stream appears to be stable, I'm piggybacking the Davion Intel files from the AFFS HQ as requested. Some slippage may occur due to the faulty connection, may the Will of Blake protect us--Brit, Adept III ROM ]

Northwind was settled in the first wave of the human Exodus from Terra in 2236. This planet, consisting mostly of rugged highlands and small, windswept islands naturally attracted many of the fleeing Scottish Clans. Under Clan Stuart, a formerly-royal Terran Clan, the planet prospered. The capitol city of Kearney was constructed, as well as what would later be known as Castle Northwind.

The Castle Northwind and Guard

[Local lore holds that the Castle Northwind sits upon a semi-functional Star League Castle Brian. I myself have seen Highlander 'mechs enter the courtyard and not be see again for days. This should be investigated immediately--Brit]

The surrounding town of Kearney grew to be a major interstellar starport, prompting the need for a new planetary garrison to defend the pristine world against outside threats. Direct descendants of the 75th and 79th Highlander Foot Regiments formed together to create the 1st Kearney Highlanders Combined-Arms Tank Regiment, the first of what would be a full six BattleMech Regiments by the fall of the Star League in 2784.

The capitol of Kearney

Spared the wrath of the Age of War by joining the Terran Hegemony, the Northwind Highlander regiments lent themselves out as mercenary troops of outstanding quality. The Regiments returned home victorious, and the planet soon joined the fledgling Star League along with the rest of the Terran Hegemony. The Highlanders held a special bond with the ruling Camerons, with whom they felt they shared a kindred spirit. The Cameron evidently returned the sentiment, allowing troops from the Highlanders to form the new Royal Black Watch Regiment--the guardians of the Court of the Star League.

[There have been no leads on the theories that the Camerons gave Northwind a favored planet status with respect to military technology. Nevertheless, rumors persist of a Star League depot in the hills near Benwyvis. I am continuing to investigate this lead--Brit]

The planet prospered until the fall of the Star League. Four of the six Highlander Regiments were on loan to House Liao immediately following the reclaiming of Terra by SLDF forces. After Kerensky's own Exodus, these units were trapped away from their homeworld. During the First Succession war the planet was invaded and changed hands multiple times, finally falling into Davion control in 2841. The two defending regiments, the 2nd Kearney and Stuart's were both destroyed.

Drop on Kearney, SW1

[This has left a rift of hatred between the surviving Highlanders and the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns that we may be able to exploit--Brit]

After the carnage of the first two wars, Northwind was spared the continued barbarism of the third by an impressive showing of Davion force on the world. Their most recent ruler, Prince Hanse Davion, has even gone so far as to allow the citizens of Northwind to rebuild the Kearney regiment using AFFS stockpiles. That, along with massive reconstruction and environmental cleaning efforts, have earned the Prince much respect amongst the local population. While still dreaming of the time when their lost brethren can return home, they are happy to be under the rule of the Davions.

[While not as ripe as some Liao or Kuritan systems, rebellion may be fomented here in time with the proper pushes--Brit]

Thanks to the population losses during the wars and the Davion clean-up attempts, much of the planet has reverted to its natural state. Some cities are seasonal, opening as if hibernating every few seasons when the need arises due to tourism or industry. Once such odd case is the city of MacArthur near Lake Benwyvis on the small southern continent of Cymruu. I visited there once a few years back during an occupied period.

Lake Benwyvis

The town of MacArthur caters to one thing: Prospecting. Specifically in Lostech. Abandoned in the First Succession War, the townspeople packed up their smaller belonging and sealed the small town as if they intended to return. The town was later re-settled during the second war, but moving fronts forced the colonists to leave in the same fashion. Soon, as the unstable population came and went, the packing up of the town became a tradition. Sometimes sealed for years at a time, the occasional rumor of the Benwyvis Depot sweeps the planet or media and prospectors flock to the area to revive the old buildings with new life. Invariably, the rumors prove to be false and the town is sealed yet again to await the next mini-invasion. It is a fun place, with the culture changing from year to year. The last time I was in the area there were two old dodgers, and Irishman and a Scot, that insisted every morning (against the prudent warnings of their families) to climb two local peaks on either side of the township and attempt to out play each other on their respective pipes at the crack of dawn. It was said that they had been doing it for years as a feud over a long-lost girl, which I find hard to believe. Nevertheless, the wailing of Illiean and Scottish pipes could be heard for miles every morning.

In conclusion, Northwind is a beautiful world with a rich and unique culture. With rolling hills and jagged highlands, it is easy to imagine yourself standing on the cliffs of Brittania centuries ago. I hope that you can join us there.

[The location of this planet and the possibilities of Lostech warrant a continued watch on this world. As per orders, I am reporting back to Kearney as soon as I can make arrangements. Peace of Blake be with you--Brit, Adept III ROM]
