Lola-Class WarShip

WarShip. While it has been over two hundred years since the last WarShip vanished forever in a mis-jump, the mere mention of the word still manages to conjure up mixed images of awe and fear. Built during the height of Kearny-Fuchida jumpdrive technology, these massive vessels were able to not only jump from system to system on their own, but could escourt a DropShip convoy during the entire journey and assist in planetary bombardments once there. Able to engage both orbiting and ground-based targets allowed the navys of the era to use these giant ships to enfore their authority over thousands of planets. Though current day JumpShips are considered huge, they would have seemed no more than small transports in the heydey of the Star League. Even so, we barely understand how to operate our jumpShips--let alone attempt to recreate the superior-capabilities of the Star League models.

The Lola-Class Destroyer was one of the smallest ships of the line used by the Star League Navy. A mere 653 meters long (as compaired to the 1.5km long McKenna-class), the Lola was envisioned as a ship that was easy and inexpensive to build, strong enough for escourt duties in the Periphery, and dependable enough for extended picket duty in the star systems of the Terrna Hegemony. To meet the Navy's request for a destroyer that could withstand punishment, Boeing Interstellar comsulted with several BattleMech manufacturers about the most effective use of armor on the ship's hull. The 'mech makers recommended the use of what was called "baffled-deadspace", a cushion layer between the inner and outer hull to absorb the impact of a weapon hit. The concept improved the Lola's protection, but the innovative armor added too much weight to the ship. To counter the problem, Boeing used four Rolls LeFay interplanetary drives to move the ship--engines designed for a much larger class of vessel. Using these engines in a destroyer left little room for anythign else, making tight quarters throughout the Lola. Even using the improved engines did not make the Lola swift, but it could at least maneuver around transports. As an escourt vessel, the Lola had no equal. A single Lola-class destroyer guarding a convoy was usually enough to keep most pirates at bay. A single Lola today could change the face of warfare for an entire region of space.
